Yesterday I went to Gazi to say goodbye to Josy, one sweat Canadian friend I’ve met here in Athens (through couchsurfing, as always
). We spent just a couple minutes together then she and her host had to return home and me too, it was almost 1 o’clock or something like that, I am not sure now.
I decided to walk home, from Gazi to Kypseli…, I love to walk despite the distance, but when I have to work in the next morning I have to make some “uncomfortable” decisions…, lets take a cab in Panepistimio…
I have better visual memory than auditive, and mixing that with the fact that I am a dumb sometimes things can became funny…, I just said to the taxi driver:
Pros Odos Spetson, icosi
This doesn’t mean anything, because as I said, I am dumb…, in Greek is something like this: προς Οδός ΣΠΕΤΣΩΝ, είκοσι, the fact that sigma reads ALWAYS with the sound “s” is something that I don’t have always in my mind…, so I just said in the Portuguese way, “ícozi“, of course the guy didn’t understand and I had to repeat it…, two more times…, when the guy understood I just said, in my behalf, that I am Portuguese and that I was sorry because of my poor Greek…
What I did…, after that we had a conversation…, IN GREEK!!! Of course I just spit all the phrases I’ve learned in my Greek Classes “I am Portuguese, I am 26 years old, I am working here”, blablabla…, the guy was surprise how I learned that much Greek just in four months…, now I am surprised how I could stand a conversation in Greek
I understood almost everything, it was funny and at the same time I felt proud of myself!
Now the best part…, when we arrived at my place, the guy just told…, “I am from Albania”! God! I was speaking in Greek with an Albanian? No wonder he thought I speak good Greek…, now my self-esteem is in the right place
I still a dumb
And now I am wondering why I just wrote this in English, only Portuguese people read this
It is just another reason to make a fool of myself with my “English”
Enjoy it*
Not only Portuguese read it – Lithuanians as well (Thanks to google translate;))))
